Sara Brand

As Interviewed by Emma Nations, March 8, 2015
"I think that it was just harder -- I had to prove myself more; I had to get better grades. To get the same opportunities, I had to fight for things just because of an unconscious bias that was there."

Introductory Profile: About Sara Brand

Sara Brand is the founder and CEO of True Wealth Innovations. She has her Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. I interviewed Sara on the topic of gender diversity and social injustice towards women in the technology industry.

Sara and my mother worked together in the technology industry in Austin, Texas for many years. My mother described Sara as one of the smartest people she’s ever met, as well as being extremely friendly and open. I knew that Sara would be a good interview candidate for Firsthand History because of her background and experiences in the field of engineering, which is not a field that has a large percentage of women.

At first I was nervous about the interview because I had not spoken to Sara except through our email. We conducted the interview in Sara’s pretty home, with her son and his friend playing in the background. Sara was very open to me, and her welcoming personality made me relax and have a great interview. We discussed topics like being one of the few females in engineering school, some of the skills that women have that make them great leaders, and some of the areas that may be holding women back in Corporate America.

It became clear to me during the interview that Sara is very passionate about her experiences, and the work she is now doing to help women in the workforce. Her work to enable more women-led businesses and fund more companies with diverse management teams is both interesting and exciting.
