"I looked down and I saw his name and there was an asterisk by his name. So I said, 'what does that mean?' And I went down and the asterisk meant guys who died in captivity. "

Introductory Profile: About William Edward Render

This is an interview of Lt. Col William Edward Render, my grandfather, who I have known since the day I was born. He was born in South Amboy, New Jersey in 1934. After attending Virginia Tech, a military college, William flew in the Air Force as a navigator in a reconnaissance plane for 20 years. He flew bravely in the Vietnam War and the Cold War. My interview was about his time in the skies over Vietnam.

William Render is now 83 years old, retired, and lives in San Antonio. He is 5’9”, always has a smile on his face, and is the center of all the conversations in the room. William is a caucasian male, with hazel eyes, and is a well dressed gentlemen. It was a treat to talk with such a wonderful man.

The tone of this interview was serious, as the Vietnam war was a very serious topic, but their were some funny moments. I did this interview in person, which made the material feel more raw and real. I am very thankful that I was able to talk with William, and I wish everyone could talk with him.
