"Prosecutors really prioritize winning over getting it right, police practices are not constrained enough... and our sentences are way too long -- we put people in jail for way too much time."

Introductory Profile: About Rebecca Bernhardt

My interviewee, Rebecca Bernhardt, is my mother, and she worked in multiple criminal justice organizations and nonprofits. We talked about how the criminal justice system has many flaws and about her career and involvement in criminal justice organizations.

The justice system is very racially biased -- the arrest rate for African-Americans is 3 to 6 times higher than that of White Americans. Also, when people who canít afford an attorney, which they have a constitutional right too, the court is supposed to provide one. However the court often fails to do this, either by not providing one at all or by providing an incompetent, unskilled, or uneducated lawyer.
