Introductory Profile: About Toan Leung

Dr. Toan Leung was born in Vietnam and immigrated to the United States following the end of the Vietnam War. Dr. Leung is the father of one of my close friends from elementary school. Our families found an immediate connection when we realized that her parents and my parents all attended the University of Michigan. Dr. Leung is an emergency physician and has lived in Austin with his family for the past 14 years.

In this interview, Dr. Leung shares his experiences escaping Communist Vietnam. We follow his journey through a secret night escape, refugee camps in Indonesia and Thailand, and finally his arrival to Los Angeles, California. Dr. Leung describes his two year voyage to the United States, and reflects on what he has learned from this experience. Through this conversation, Dr. Leung shares insights on the immigrant experience and how it has shaped his view of the world.
