Introductory Profile: About Madhu Nerlikar

Madhu Nerlikar is my grandfather on my mother’s side. He was born in Nerli, India in 1946. He immigrated to the US in 1970, in search for better career opportunities and jobs.

In our interview, Madhu talks about why he came to the US, mentioning wanting to get job experience and mainly wanting to get his masters degree in engineering. When asked about any social issues in the US at the time, Madhu describes the riots and protests that took place on the campus of his school. He describes how he got his visas and was able to immigrate, explaining that the US government searching for engineers to come to the US. He also talks about his job in the US as an engineer.

It was really interesting to learn about a US immigrant’s experience in the 1970’s, and I hope you(the listener) agree.
