John Tian: In His Own Words

Everybody goes to school, but some kids do well in school, and some donít. When I mean donít basically means they donít follow what the teacher taught or cannot do well academically. Usually, my way of coping is that if I donít know, I just spend more time to study. And also in school, we have the system where you can, before you go to class, you can preview what the teacherís going to teach so that you are mentally prepared for whatís there, and when you go to the class, you listen to what teacher has to say, and then if you donít understand, ask them questions. After the class you can also do a review, just to review the notes you took, and then make sure you understand the topic.

Usually in China, resources are allocated based on where you live. In the city and urban areas, they get more resources, so schools are better equipped. In rural areas, schools have less resources, so teachers are less qualified, and also the buildings are less advanced. And sometimes the classroom equipment are also less etiquette in rural areas. For example, not all teachers would have a college degree, and some buildings are not well maintained. There was there was no AC, and also the physics and chemistry lessons, the teacher would demonstrate, but students donít really have the resources to do it themselves. For example, you canít do certain experiments because thereís not enough materials, or thereís no facility for everyone to do it, so they just watch teacher, see how teacher does it, and then try to remember. For example if you burn a chemical and see the color of the flame and then the smell of the burn, I remember you would the burn chloride gas to generate the HCL, and then you burn the hydrogen to create water in chemistry, I saw that.

When I was little, I always want to grow up to become a scientist, and after graduating from college, I had a job, but it was far from being a scientist. My college degree was in environmental engineering. I want to help with the environment, and to do that, I need to advance my education so that I had better opportunities to first of all, study more about the whatís necessary to be a good environmental engineer, and also to see whatís happening around the world. At that time, I think US was considered a more advanced country, so I basically came to the US to learn technologies and new skills.

One of the main things was that I liked English, I studied English more than my classmates when I was in school. Some of the college students they think that after they get admitted to the college, they donít think they will use foreign language, so they donít study as hard as I do.
