Sandy Wicken: In Her Own Words

My name is Sandy Wicken, growing up, well before my parents got married, they worked in the fields picking walnuts, fruits, oranges, so forth. My father was a high school graduate, my mom was a, not high school graduate. She’s white with Indian(native) in her, and her dad was Indian and her mom was white. She grew up in the, poor part of California, way poor. There were 7 kids, 4 guys. Most of the boys grew up joining the service in order to survive. Growing up as kids, my parents worked, both of them worked and my grandmother, who was working when my mom had her first child, decided to stop working in the fields so that she could take care of my sister and all the siblings that came along so my mom could continue working. My first teacher, she was very nice but she did have a... teacher assistant that would come and help, and it was a young white blond that I would say was nicer to the kids that didn’t look really Hispanic. It was really bad, they would pass me even if I didn’t understand some things and they would push me along...
