"Honestly, it feels like we're always doing assessments"

Introductory Profile: About Carolyn McKaskle

I interviewed my mom, Carolyn McKaskle. She has been a Kindergarten teacher for 16 years. The first 4 years she taught in California, including one year of student teaching. She has been teaching in Austin at Kiker Elementary for the past 12 years.

I was originally planning to talk about teacher salaries and their change over time. Once we started talking about the different ways teachers could or should get paid, we ended up talking about testing. The number of required assessments teachers are required to give is increasing rapidly every year, putting more focus on student performance than actual education and learning.
